Gujarat University is an affiliating state-owned educational institution situated in Ahmedabad. It was formed under Gujarat University Act, leading more than six decades of quality education to Indian students. 1. Established in 1949

Gujarat University was established on 23 November 1949. This makes the institution more than 67 years old and hence, shows how GU has improved in all aspects in these years. The formation of this university was recommended in 1920’s by Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Amritlal Hargovinddas and many other scholars of that time. Ahmedabad Education Society can be called the parent organization for GU.

2. High number of affiliated colleges

Gujarat University currently has 350 colleges under its affiliation. They also have 35 approved and 20 recognized institutions under the list. Most affiliated colleges are privately managed but have to follow certain benchmarks in order to keep the courses running for coming years. The working of the university is divided among different departments and Registrar is the official working head of all internal departments.

3. Huge 260-acre campus

Gujarat University is Located in Navrangpura locality of Ahmedabad, the 1.1 km2 (260 acres) campus is equipped with all modern facilities for students and the faculty. They have dedicated sports areas for different games like basketball, football and hockey while indoor games like table tennis also get equal importance at the university.

4. Number of Students

The exact number of current students fall above 3.5 lakh. Average university enrollment ratios between undergraduate and postgraduate students is 7:1. This further varies between different colleges affiliated with the university. Some have a huge strength of undergraduate students while few are totally dedicated to postgraduate courses.

5. University’s own radio station

Gujarat’s first ever university radio system, 90.8 MHz GURU, was started in GU in March 2012. It is fifth of its own kind in India. The effective station covers five kilometers of area around the university. The overall project cost was over INR 6 million. Gujarat University has even more plans like launching satellite communication channels for lectures.

The university is divided into various sections like school of law, commerce, languages (English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu), philosophy, psychology, science and social sciences. All of these have different departments under them, branching the education system in an effective manner. Other non-academic departments like sports, health and publication are also an important part of Gujarat University's pride.

Gujarat University offers two doctoral courses, one each in Medicine and Philosophy. Apart from these, it acts as teaching university for postgraduate courses and has no undergraduate course at their own campus. Certificate courses, diplomas and undergraduate courses can only be pursued from affiliated colleges and teaching departments.

9. Placements

The Gujarat University offers its students with better chances of success through campus placements. They have a dedicated placement cell and offers from brands like Infosys, Zydus Cadila and Torrent Pharmaceuticals help them enter the corporate world with much ease. Internships can fetch around INR 14-15k per month of compensation through GU.
